Personal Video Habits
It is very seldom that I do not watch videos during the day. At a younger age, I would spend a lot of my time on our family-shared computer after school. Of course, part of that time was spent arguing with my siblings about what we watched, listened to, or played; however, we would almost always end up on youtube, watching music videos or videos we found funny. Now that we are older and have our own video habits, we watch different things. For me, TikTok has taken up a large portion of my screen time, as well as multiple streaming services, and of course, Youtube.
TikTok has dominated the social media world in only a few short years. Unfortunately, I have become one of the many people of my generation who struggle to escape the app. One second I find myself with some free time and open TikTok, the next second, it has suddenly been an hour, and it seems as if I have only watched five one-minute videos.
One of the most exciting aspects of TikTok is its algorithm. After joining the app, you must interact with videos you enjoy to create a "ForYou" page designed for your interests. It has taken a while, but my "ForYou" page shows me videos that I enjoy, mostly anyways. Most recently, Elmo has found his way onto my TikTok. He was on my "ForYou" page so often that I thought everyone saw the videos as well. To my surprise, not everyone was as fortunate as me to see the red-fuzzy Muppet; however, some of my friends have seen him and found the videos as funny as I did. After all, who doesn't love to see a friendly face from your childhood?

When I acquire much free time, I will binge-watch a show. I cannot begin a show while school is in session unless the show is gaining a lot of publicity and good reviews. If I did, I would be tempted to abandon my responsibilities and procrastinate my work; however, I will watch television and movies with my family when I have time. Most recently, we binge-watched both seasons of the Apple TV+ Original, Ted Lasso.
I cannot discuss my video habits without mentioning Marvel. I watched all of the movies in chronological order during my senior year of high school. Then, about a year ago, I convinced my parents to watch the films with me, so I watched them again. I watch the movies and series as they come out, and I do my best to avoid spoilers. Disney+ is the best place to stream MCU movies, and I have enjoyed getting to watch them with my family and friends. I also get a lot of Marvel content on my TikTok.
As I said before, TikTok takes up most of my screen time. I do not get on Youtube as often, but I still use it periodically. My main go-to when I am on Youtube is Good Mythical Morning. I have watched their Youtube channel since I was in middle school. Their fanbase has grown a lot since then, and so has their channel. I watch them less often than I used to, but I am still a fan of theirs.
I do not think my video habits are uncommon compared to those my age, but I want to make some adjustments. I took some time to examine my video habits honestly, and in the process, I realized that I needed to decrease my time on TikTok. When I checked my average time on the app, I cringed. I plan to take some advice from others and put a timer on the app. As for my video habits as a whole, they will change as my interests do. The videos and platforms I am interested in today will probably be different in a year, and I look forward to reading this later and seeing what has changed.
