Apple TV+

As someone born in the early 2000s, I have slowly witnessed the significant changes in how we watch movies and television in only the last two decades. I remember how important it was that we bought a disk compatible with our Blu-ray DVD player whenever there was a new movie we wanted to buy. I could not tell you the last time I bought a DVD or rented one from a Redbox kiosk. Streaming services have entirely taken over how we rent and buy movies and television. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, movie theaters have seen a significant decline in customers because people would rather wait for the movie to be released on their streaming services. Some films will be released in theaters for a small window before shifting towards a service where families can watch at home. Although a movie theater experience is desired, families find it cheaper to wait and rent the movie rather than pay $10.00 a ticket at a movie theater.

My family pays for several streaming services, such as Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, and Hulu. Most recently, we started watching content on Apple TV+

Apple TV+ was released worldwide in November of 2019. I vaguely remember the launch of the service due to the excitement of Disney+, which was released only two weeks later. After two years, Disney+ is still making headway against the Apple streaming platform. This is primarily due to the availability on each platform, and of course, it is hard to compete against Disney's Marvel and Star Wars content. Regardless of Apple TV+'s competitors, the platform is doing relatively well

Apple TV+ is mostly popular due to its affordability, at only $4.99 a month, and popular original content. Apple does not release statistics regarding its streaming platform, so the total number of views and subscribers is unknown; however, fans of the service cannot stop talking about their favorite shows.

The first show I watched on Apple TV+, and one of the most viewed shows on the platform, was Ted Lasso. The show follows former American football coach Ted Lasso as he begins coaching a British soccer team with no knowledge of the sport. I found the show both heartwarming and funny. There is no confusion as to why people enjoy the show so much. The show has won seven Emmy awards, including an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series. Ted Lasso has 2 seasons currently streaming, with season 3 in the beginning stages of production. The second season of the series boosted Apple TV+'s popularity and was a big success.

Another one of Apple TV+'s popular series is The Morning Show. The drama series stars Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Steve Carrell. The show depicts a morning news program that is put under fire after it is revealed that America's beloved co-anchor, Steve Carrell, is guilty of sexual misconduct in the workplace. The show truly "pulls back the curtain" regarding accusations such as sexual misconduct and how these actions are overlooked and put undercover. I enjoyed this series for the storyline and depiction of how a news network operates. As a media analyst and journalist, I enjoyed watching the broadcasting aspect of the show and witnessing the jobs used to make a news network run. The Morning Show currently has 2 seasons streaming on the platform.

One final show that is popular on the platform is The Shrink Next Door. The series stars Paul Rudd and Will Ferrell and is based on a true story about a man and his therapist. Although this doesn't sound very exciting, you cannot stop watching. The therapist is very manipulative and controlling and uses his patients for personal gain. The performances from Rudd and Ferrell were surprising considering their comedic background; however, they did a fantastic job.

Although Apple TV+ is not as popular as the other primary streaming services, the quality of its content is remarkable. Apple TV+ has not disappointed me yet and I look forward to diving deeper into the platform after watching the most popular shows.
