#7 - Binge Watching

 Binge Watching: Outer Banks

I remember the very first show I binge-watched on a streaming platform. I was in seventh grade, and I begged my parents to buy Netflix so I could watch Pretty Little Liars. Since then, Netflix has been at my disposal to watch any show the platform offers.  I usually only have time to binge-watch shows when I am on extended breaks from school. Still, my family now has access to almost every streaming platform, so I can basically watch anything I find interesting. There are multiple shows that I have enjoyed binge-watching, but one show that I have thoroughly enjoyed watching recently is the Netflix original Outer Banks.

Over Christmas break, I watched both seasons of the hit Netflix original Outer Banks. I remember when the show initially premiered during the pandemic. It pulled everyone into a frenzy due to its popularity; however, though I was surrounded by Outer Banks content on TikTok and Instagram, I was never tempted to watch the show, even during quarantine.

Season One Trailer:

It wasn't until one of my friends told me that I had to watch the show that I decided to try it. The plot of the show was fascinating. The show follows teenager John B and his friends as they plan to have the "best summer ever" in their hometown located in the Outer Banks of South Carolina. The gang finds themselves in more trouble than they realize, beginning with a dangerous treasure hunt that pulls them further from the summer of their dreams.

For someone who loves South Carolina and the Charleston area, I immediately fell in love with the setting. I visited Charleston in the Summer of 2019, and since then, I have wanted to live there; my family went back only last week during spring break. I got to see many locations where the show was filmed, which made the trip even more enjoyable.

When Outer Banks first premiered on Netflix in 2020, the show was viewed for 2.1 billion minutes. Although viewership decreased during the premiere of their second season, the show was still #1 on the platform for quite some time. In my opinion, although the viewership was low, the second season was better than the first. It took me a bit of patience to get into the first two episodes of season one before I was hooked; however, the second season had more "shock factors" that interested me.

Season Two Trailer:

The cast recently announced the production of season three of Outer Banks. I am very excited to see what happens next on the show, and I am even more excited to see more landmarks that I may have seen during my vacation. From being someone who wasn't interested in watching the show to becoming a fan, I would definitely recommend the show to someone who may be on the fence about it. I am a bit biased about the setting, but it takes place in one of the most beautiful and eye-catching places.  Living in the area may only be a dream now, but I can vicariously live there while binge-watching the show when season three is released.
